Medicare Part B is the second part of Original Medicare. It covers services and supplies that are medically necessary to treat you outside of the hospital. This can include outpatient care, preventive services, ambulance services, and services of this nature. It also covers home health and rehabilitative services, such as physical therapy, if they are ordered your doctor.

Your annual deductible for Part B is $183 in 2017. You will also be responsible for the unlimited 20% coinsurance. You will want to purchase a Medicare supplement plan to cover these gaps in your coverage. This is an area where we can help you! Give us a shout!

Anyone who is eligible for premium-free Part A qualifies for Part B. However, you must enroll and in 2017 and pay a $134 monthly premium. You may also qualify for enrollment through disability. If you are under 65 and receiving Social Security payments, you will automatically be enrolled in Part A and B after 24 months.

You will need to sign up for Part B during your Open Enrollment Period. This is the seven-month enrollment period that begins three months before you turn 65, the month you turn 65, and ends three months later. Coverage starts on the first day of your birthday month.

You can delay enrollment in Part B if you have employer health coverage. If you are still working, check with your employer to see how your insurance would work with Medicare. You can sign up later during a Special Enrollment Period without paying a late penalty.

Keep in mind that retiree coverage and COBRA are not considered health coverage. You will not qualify for a special enrollment period. If you have COBRA, you should not wait until your COBRA ends to sign up for Part B. Delaying could result in a penalty.
