– On Friday, House Republicans failed to muster enough support to pass the GOP healthcare plan, which some call Trumpcare. In response, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has announced he will soon introduce a bill to create a single-payer healthcare system. Several progressive groups are backing a single-payer system, including the Working Families Party, the Progressive Campaign Change Committee, CREDO, Social Security Works and National Nurses United. For more, we speak with Dr. Steffie Woolhandler, co-founder of Physicians for a National Health Program. She is a professor at CUNY-Hunter College and a primary care physician. She is also a lecturer at Harvard Medical School.

Haven’t we all been hoodwinked – the people want free health care for all, just like in Canada.
We’ve had health care for everyone since the 50s in Western Europe. Even countries with right wing governments accept health care as a human right and would not dare to touch it. If they tried,.there would be strikes all over. The economy would come to a standstill.

Modem Mark Yeah but the thing about a single payer system is you don’t have to coerce anyone to pay. They get taxed and that goes to pay for HC. Everyone wins the cost is spread and the effective amount everyone pays is much lower. No one becomes bankrupt because they suddenly become ill.

The system is deeply corrupt, but politicians still need votes. Voters are kept disinformed and disorganized, so voting doesn’t have much impact, but if voters got half smart and half organized, they’d find they had a lot of power, and something like single payer would be easy.
It’s a genuine question, do people really want the federal government to have an monopoly on healthcare.
Single payer is the only solution.
As a liberal I have one major bone to pick with a federal single payer system and its the Republicans. The Republicans are breaking up programs now and they will to a federal single payer system. They won’t privatize it all at once, they’ll do what the conservatives did in Australia. Which is break the single payer system enough to allow people to buy their own insurance. The best option is to go with state based Bismarck systems. Which would consist of the states negotiation for medical services, we’d pay into semi private nonprofit health funds that have limited self administration. This would mean putting everyone not currently on Medicare, Medicaid, or federal employee programs into the state based systems. Then transition medicaid recipients into the universal system with a small program to cover copays for hospitalization assuming the copays are allowed to go to an unaffordable rate or their employers don’t provide an affordable supplement plan.

If you are referring to single payer, single payer has been proven the world over to cost far LESS per capita than does the absurdly expensive US health care system.
Lets be honest, in order for healthcare to be universal than taxes will have to go up on everyone.
yeah taxes will go up but they would still be less than the amount people pay for private insurance. people will have more disposable income in the long run which they can use to strengthen the economy.
Sadly there is no way that private insurance will allow this! They will find candidates and contribute to their campaigns so that they do everything they can to stop such a program!
