If and when the Republicans cut Medicare and repeal Obamacare, the Democrats will have no other choice than to push for a single-payer system. Starting off at the state level, then at the Federal level.

+whyamimrpink78, Vermont’s single-payer program was passed and signed by the Vermont governor. However, it was forestalled, cancelled, as it would cost a very small state with limited income a lot of money.
Colorado’s single-payer failed to be approved by voters as the law was badly crafted to prohibit politicians to divert money and implement anti-choice measures. On top of this, there was a strong backlash from the insurance companies to downplay the law.
All I’m saying is that once Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare are substantially cut/undermine. The Democrats will have no other choice than to push for single payer. Maybe in the end we’ll end up with a public insurance option?
The strategy is always to start with Single-Payer so that the end compromise is a public insurance option to compete with the costly/wasteful private insurance companies.
In the end, some states may end up with a public insurance option if the traditional social programs (medicaid and medicare) are substantially cut/undermined. If the Federal government were to cut/undermine the aforementioned programs the costs would be redistributed to states, counties, cities, and individuals. Governments with less money will suffer. States like California and New York will manage well.
California will prove to be strongly opposed (and vocal) to the Trump presidency as well as to the Republican Party. California perhaps ends up putting a public option initiative/proposition on the ballot? Maybe even a single payer initiative (California One Care) just to piss off the health insurance industry? This past election, CA couldn’t even approve a proposition (through the voters) for the state of CA to negotiate drug prices with Big Pharma. It was a 4-5% difference though. It is likely to pass 2-4 years from now though.
If there’s any state in the Union that can manage a single payer system it is CA. It has the money to provide the service, the strong union + wealthy influence, a simple majority of voters are in favor of it, and so on. Time will tell…
