Learn how and where to sign up for Medicare

Aside from learning the coverage and benefits that you’ll get from Medicare, it is also essential to know the right method of Medicare sign up for this program. It will give you a seamless experience while you are in the process of enrollment.

Before you sign up for Medicare, it is essential to take note that there are some requirements that you have to meet to get started. You can apply for the program when you are not yet receiving retirement benefits. You may also enroll when you found out that you have end-stage renal disease.

Individuals who are living in Puerto Rico who want to Medicare sign up Part B will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A.

You can enroll in Original Medicare using the following options through Social Security:

Via online – visit SSA.gov as the first step of the sign-up. It is a Social Security website with a handful of information regarding retirement benefits as well. Therefore, you can also use it to enroll for both Medicare and retirement benefits. However, if you don’t have plans to retire yet, simply apply for Medicare option only.

Via phone – Social Security is available from Monday through Friday from 7 am to 7 pm to assist you on the enrollment process. Call the phone numbers 1-800-772-1213, or for TTY users, dial 1-800-325-0778.

In-person – you may also visit the Social Security office near your area. A Social Security Office Locator can help you find their local offices.

For individuals who worked at a railroad, there is also an option for them for Medicare sign up. The Railroad Retirement Board is available from Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Simply call the phone numbers 1-877-772-5772, or for TTY users, dial 1-312-751-4701.

Typically, the method of signing-up via online is fast and easy. It will only take you about 10 minutes to complete the process. You can also save money from going personally to the Social Security office. You don’t have to sign any form or be asked to present any documentation. Social Security will take the responsibility to process the application, and you only need to wait for this agency to call you if they need to get some sufficient information from you.

Your application will be submitted electronically, allowing you to avoid the hassle of mailing your application. Once you are done, click “Submit Now” and all the information you entered will be sent directly to the Social Security database. Furthermore, you will also receive a printable receipt after the process so that you can keep your record.

If you passed the application, you should expect to receive your Medicare card through the mail in about three months before you become 65 years old. But if you are automatically enrolled in this program, you can get it on the 25th month of your disability benefits.

If you have Health Savings Account (HAS) or health insurance provided by your employer, you must first learn the pros and cons of Medicare sign up by asking your insurance company or personnel office.
