88 Medicare Questions in 88 Days (888) 506-7510
Will my Non Working Spouse get Medicare at Age 65?”
That’s the question that we get a lot of time. In general to get Medicare you have to be aged 65 and if you’re under 65 you have to be disabled or have a qualifying illness like an end-stage renal disease or Lou Gehrig’s disease. If an employed person who has worked for more than 10 years which is 40 quarters that person is entitled to Medicare benefits. Part A (hospitals) is generally premium -free for having paid taxes throughout the years.
So what happens if you have an older spouse who hasn’t worked turn 65 before you do. The question is are they eligible for Medicare? Remember you are the one that’s working so that’s a yes and a yes but answer.
Here’s how it works. It all hinges on the fact that the working spouse HAS to be aged 62 for the non-working spouse to be able to get Part A premium-free. You don’t have to actually get your benefits but you have to be age 62 (age eligible). So if you are more than 3 years difference with between the two of you the non-working spouse will have to pay for that until you turn 62. Bottom line it all hinges on the fact that the person who has been working is 62 years old for the non-working spouse to get Part A premium-free. The non working spouse can get Medicare, but won’t get it premium-free UNTIL the working spouse is age eligible at Age 62.
If you’re not 62 years old yet your non-working spouse will have to pay the Part A premium until you turn 62 so keep that in mind. The non-working spouse is still eligible for Medicare if they’re older than you for example and they’re 65 there are a couple years of difference in age they will get Part A premium free when the working spouse is age eligible at Age 62.
