The federal health insurance program for individuals age 65 and older is referred to as Medicare.

Open enrollment for Medicare begins on October 15, 2014 and goes through December 7, 2014. The effective date for these policies will be January 1, 2015.
During this time, individuals already enrolled in Medicare can change their Part D (Prescription) coverage during the enrollment period; however, if Part D coverage was not purchased at age 65 when you were initially eligible, there will be penalties.

Please Note: Medicare coverage is also provided for certain individuals under the age of 65 with disabilities or requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant.
