How do Medicare Advantage Plans work?

Medicare Advantage Plans must and do cover the services that Original Medicare covers with one exception, and that is hospice care. Original Medicare will continue to cover hospice care even if you are on a Medicare Advantage Plan.

So Medicare advantage will cover all the original Medicare coverages plus additional coverages that are not included in the original Medicare.

In all types of Medicare Advantage Plans, you are always covered for emergency and urgently needed care.

Some of these additional coverages in an Advantage Plan may include:
Vision,
Hearing,
Dental,
Health and wellness programs,
Medicare prescription drug coverage.

So just what is Medicare Advantage substituting?

It is substituting Medicare part A and Medicare part B.

Medicare part A, provides payments for inpatient hospital services, but excludes payments to physicians and surgeons.

Medicare part B, provides payments to the physicians and surgeons as well as medically necessary outpatient hospital services such as:
ER,
Lab Work,
X-rays,
and Diagnostic tests.
It will also cover certain medical equipment and supplies.

So to recap, Medicare Advantage does everything that Medicare part A and Medicare part B does and adds additional coverages that you may need or want.
