Voluntary Medicare Society of Jammu and Kashmir was established in 1970 as a socio-medical organization dedicated to the care, treatment, and rehabilitation of physically challenged individuals with special focus on the poverty stricken, irrespective of caste, color, creed, and religion.
On the 7th of November, 1995, the organization founded Shafaqat Special School for mentally, speech, and hearing challenged children, with the foundation stone being laid by the Society's founder, Dr. Mohd. Maqbool Mir.
