Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28-Year-Old Socialist, Wins Primary on Medicare for All & Abolishing ICE

– In a stunning upset and the biggest surprise of the primary season this year, 28-year-old Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beat 10-term incumbent Representative Joe Crowley in New York in Tuesday’s Democratic primary. Crowley is the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House, and he’d outraised Ocasio-Cortez by a 10-to-1 margin. Crowley was widely viewed as a possible future House speaker. Yet Ocasio-Cortez defeated Crowley after running a progressive grassroots campaign advocating for “Medicare for All” and the abolition of ICE, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Ocasio-Cortez speaks to Democracy Now! about her historic campaign.

    • So how many “No-Go” zones are there in America where criminal, “Islamic” thugs dwell? Selling drugs, running guns, kidnapping and raping women……. How many was that?

    • tripplefive
Can you people get anything right? They’re not “Socialist” like you think….. Good God what are we dealing with here:

“In response to Americans frequently referring to his country as socialist, the prime minister of Denmark recently remarked in a lecture at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government,

I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism. Therefore I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy.”

Ignore that at your leisure as the liberal is wont to do.

  1. Tremendous on many levels. Looking forward to watch her do good work for the people. Nice to see real people not billionaires in office.

  2. Well done Ms. Ocasio-Cortez! You give us hope. We need more Progressives to replace the so-called Democrats like Senator Stabenow who voted to roll back the banking reforms hard fought by Senator Warren. I wish there was a Progressive running against Debbie Stabenow. I’ll vote for her in November but we need a better choice. Thank you, and best of luck!

    • Agreed. My vote in the primary will go to Marcia Squier, a Green Party progressive running for senate. I don’t like Stabenow or Peters the DINO.

    • Warren has not sold her soul, but she is not a principled and fierce fighter either. Not leadership material (in Big Politics), but she talks a good game. Which is more than many do and also helps the cause, she can explain things well. – She may have gotten some unpleasant insights into the inner workings of the shark tank *. In a progressive Senate Warren could be an asset.

Or leading an agency and being able to kick some butts !
I think if she COULD do that w/o fear of retaliation and being demoted – she would. There she could be a good leader (she already was).

      * Like that the party will unleash a lot of money against a dissenting incumben in order to replace him/her with a Republican lite candidate if they do not fall in line.

And members of the Democratic party MUST fundraise. – I wonder how Alexandria is going to solve that problem. Sanders also raises money for the Dems. He does not dial after the dollar, or is the “celebrity” during expensive and exclusive events or meeting with billionaires.

He provides the mail to his mail list or he does a speech.

    • Even Sanders makes shady compromises. Like not endorsing Tim Canova in the primaries against the snake Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Not even when Tim STILL was under the D tent (which he left meanwhile, it is pointless for him to run there).

Debbie W-S supports the predators of payday lending (donors of course).

There was a court case about election fraud. It was delayed (unusual) and then evidence (ballots) were destroyed prematurely (don’t tell me the corporate Dems did not initiate that obstruction of justice).

I think the case is still going on.
Tim Canova now runs as Independent – it does not really matter if that district gets a Republican, DWS is as good as one (with abortion rights).

And she is against Medicare for All. OF COURSE she is.

ACA is a big handout to the industry, so that is the most the citizens can expect from the likes of Obama, HRC or DWS.

DWS systematically underminded Sanders in the primaries and he knows that – and he still does not endorse Canova.

_Let that sink in: that gives you an idea what is going on behind the scenes._ – And I do not think Sanders lacks integrity but that he felt forced to make that shady compromise.

Sanders needs to cooperate with the Democratic caucus and I think helping Canova would have meant WAR. Forget about other things like Medicare for All (even a symbolic but sort of binding co-sponsoring, it was hard enough to find _some_ Dems who could be bothered to sign. if I remember correctly Warren bide her time too, but is on board now). And if he wants some federal money and projects for Vermont …..

On the other hand if there was a vote on Medicare for All – Warren would support it. If it has no chance of passing. And ALSO if her vote could make or break it. There are enough defectors/traitors of the cause within the Dems. With EW it is more that she is a coward sometimes and does not fight actively for good solutions. She would not undermine an ongoing process that has chances of succeeding.

If Sanders had made a point to campaign decisively for Tim Canova in Florida in the Democratic primaries, that would have given him the necessary exposure. It would have been also a warning shot towards the Dems. Which would have gone berserk. Not only because of the slight to one of the “inner circle”. But also the implications it had – their seats could be challenged.

Of course the district has also wealthy Jews…. but they all only got ONE vote. But are good donors. – That was the reason that DWS was DNC chair – fundraising. Not her capabilities as leader.

    • Rex Holez Hitler was a fascist sparky! Go look up the definitions of national socialist and democratic socialist.

Stop letting people use your ignorance and fear so you’ll help protect their wealth and power at the expense of your own!

    • But the Corporate Dems FIRST AND FORMOST want to keep the gravy train.
Winning the GE, beating Trump ? Sure… if that does not inconvenience them or the Big Donors.

    • The dems are paid by the Big Donors (who finance the other party as well, THEY always win). The jobs assigned to the Dems is to KEEP PROGRESSIVES DOWN. They must not win GE, but the primaries.

    • Xanxei
“No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to *the age of thirty-five years,* and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.”
      she’s 28.

    • Yes, yes, the age thing did occur to me, but it’s more fun to say it’s because we need to squeeze in Bernie first. He’s not a spring chicken and it would be a goddamn tragedy if we lost him before we got two terms of awesome presidenting out of him. So, Bernie/Nina Turner in 2020 and 2024, with Tulsi Gabbard as Secretary of State, and then Tulsi/Ocasio-Cortez in 2028. (Let AOC learn the ropes as a VP first, I’d say.) Ro Khanna and Elizabeth Warren can jump in there somewhere too. Warren would make an excellent Speaker of the House, I feel.

    • che zus We gonna have to change that. People in the states tired of being governed by corruption. Time to make some changes.

    • Sir, LMAO wrong!

Corporate money didn’t get Trump/Bannon there, anyone can be controlled (see S&P500 endorsed witch hunts, corporate media defamation). Some young dumb commie won’t last 3 months in government before being captive.

    • Bernie has good ideas but he is not president material. Also, the guy is old, bring in younger people. The presidents job takes a toll on everyone who does the job (not talking about Trump), Bernie won’t be able to make it through the presidency.

    • TYT did more than thirty pieces on her during the campaign & covered the win, maybe broaden your news sources…

    • She Cortez won her district because in it, are a lot of lazy, people with no PRIDE in themselves to actually do something with their lives. So if they can get “FREE STUFF” and not have to work and can stay home all day and play Video games or Eat Bom Bom’s that is what they will vote fore. I’m in . lol That is most likely the only district in the U.S. Except for Maxine Waters THE WIG’s District, Which hopefully is now changing to Republican and Omar Navarro. This Cortez is one and Done, She will win over the Republican also, WATCH!!!! She has shown that their is still a lot of lazy low life crap out there with no PRIDE….

  3. Watching this from Ireland, here’s hoping this is the start of a turning tide against corporate power and fascists in your country, be the America the rest of the world needs not the one we all fear

    • America is not country my good Irishman. It’s continent. The SAMaritans have taking the name of the entire Western Hemisphere as if they are the only Americans and ad if the rest of the continent does not exist.

    • Vindexproeliator Yea, I remember some of the stories that have come out regarding Christopher Columbus, as opposed to the ‘Official’ textbook story we were taught in elementary school for instance. Yea, everything’s relative.
Is that your point? That our cultural and sociological ‘Business Model’ (so to speak) is all screwed-up to begin with?

    • This is true, the US has been interfering in the rest of the Americas for far too long, the hypocritical hysteria over Russian influence is a joke compared to something like The School of the Americas and the chaos it unleashed across both continents

  4. It is so heart warming to see Amy Goodman’s face filled with joy about this! She like so many progressives have been fighting so hard and it is so beautiful to see Amy’s face filled with happiness over this win and I can see the hope for our future from this win.

  5. Democratic socialist get it right Amy. Congratulations Alexandria
Ocasio Cortez 🙂 Good things can happen if people come together! Finally someone who cares about the things that really should matter to us all. Everything this lady stands for is right in line with our true AMERICAN values!
