Conceptual understanding of the importance of a denominator file for Medicare research is essential to proper design and effective use of the Medicare administrative data. This presentation will review the source of the data in the Beneficiary Summary File and who is included in the file. A detailed description of the contents of the file that includes the variables used for patient identification, demographic information, and those used to track eligibility for receiving particular services under Medicare is provided.
