"WASHINGTON, DC — Rules Committee Chairman James P. McGovern (D-MA), Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) announced today that the House Rules Committee will hold an original jurisdiction hearing on the Medicare for All Act of 2019 on Tuesday, April 30th at 10am ET in H-313, The Capitol. It marks the first time Congress has ever held a hearing on Medicare for All. Witnesses will be announced later this week.

“I’m proud to announce this historic hearing on Medicare for All legislation. We’ve made tremendous progress expanding health care over the years, most notably with passage of the Affordable Care Act, which provided coverage to more than 20 million Americans. We have more work to do though and that’s why I’m a proud cosponsor of this bill. It’s a serious proposal that deserves serious consideration on Capitol Hill as we work toward universal coverage,” said Chairman McGovern."

Best Arguments for Medicare for All!

  1. Not supporting Medicare for All is a non-starter. Also, supporting Nancy Pelosi is a non-starter. I hope the Democratic debates have a question about whether they support Nancy Pelosi and why.

  2. Government officials only care about their expensive trips around the world with their kids and spouses…

  3. It is unbelievable that anyone is against Medicare for all, either they are ignorant or they profit from healthcare. My entire adult life I worried about not having health insurance, getting sick and losing everything I ever worked for, the anxiety this caused me is incredible. I stayed in jobs I did not like because they provided health insurance. I could have worked in jobs more enjoyable and paying more.

    • You should be worried. That’s what keeps you working. Why do you have to rely on other people or the State for your own healthcare? This is why America has the most amount of people with obesity and drug issues. Take personal responsibility and stop whining

    • +RedCapitalist maybe your addiction problems are CAUSED in the anxiety and depression people must have if you could lose everything anytime just because you get sick. And also that are not the only health issues

  4. Like our future presidents Bernie and AOC said, ” we only have empty pockets when it comes to issues that effect the regular Joe and protecting the environment, but got full pockets to spend on war, tax cuts for the rich, bailing out the banks, drug funding, high end skyscrapers, prisons”

    • “This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein” (John 12:6, KJV).

    • +no name: riiiight…That’s why Ice received 50 “thumbs up” and you got 0. Your village called – they want their idiot back…

  5. Unlimited money for the military and wars but when it comes to help your citizens suddenly money is an issue.

    • +no name The so-called “right” wrongly claim that things paid for with taxes are somehow “free stuff” because they don’t see a personal bill in the mail for the cost of those things. Like the yearly military budget that they want to *increase* spending towards, but then whine, snivel and cry about being taxed to *PAY FOR* it. Repubs want to keep using things like that, but, like a typical *deadbeat,* don’t want to pay for any of it.

    • The net saving that everyone will gain will go back into the economy and medicare for all will pay for itself. Just like a tax cut without all the stock buybacks.

    • Yes, I’ve heard Americans say about universal healthcare “oh so now you’ll have to wait to see a doctor”. Yeah…that’s still better than dying?

    • and YOU MUST KEEP FIGHTING FOR IT! conservatives will privatize the moment they get a chance. the NHS, australia’s medicare in fact any public essential service, telecommunication, education, transport, it’s always being sabotaged with cutting of resources to justify selling it off to donor corporate interest for budget surplus by conservatives.

  6. There was a documentary some years back about doctors working for the insurance companies. They would get bonuses for turning down patients that needed surgery including people terminally ill. We need to abolish all insurance companies! Medicare for all will work. Vote for Bernie Sanders.

    • Mary Shulika It was a lady doctor I’ll have to try to find her name she went before the House & Senate and admitted what the insurance companies were doing. I’ll get back to you with her name I’ll do some digging.

    • Mary Shulika I failed to find her name she was a director for an insurance company I do remember she received $250,000 bonuses each year for turning down surgeries etc. she also stated her conscience got the better of her. She ended up being a whistleblower and did go in front of the house and senate committee.

  7. “Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.”
    ― John Steinbeck

    • Get real folks. America cannot afford a better, much more cost-effective medical system.
Now don’t forget to mail the monthly check to your death panel company of choice.

  8. In Canada we have Universal Healthcare and a strong economy as well. I agree with you Cenk. It blows our minds how Americans don’t have universal healthcare for all.

    • It blows my mind that you cucks are okay with your own government telling you what you can and can not say.

    • +rachell smith: Canadian health care is excellent. Canadians travelling to the states for healthcare is DEFINITELY NOT a thing….

  9. We had this discussion n the ’50’s in Sweden, Americans are so far behind the rest of the world! The “richest and greatest” country in the world doesn’t want to care for its own citizens, just bomb, ruin, kill and steal from other countries, pathetic.

  10. They can parade as many witnesses that you want. Let’s talk about the committee members themselves. How much are they raking in from Big Pharma and therefore will ignore everything these witnesses say?

  11. Empathy-free American Republicans: Healthcare only for those that can afford it. Profits before people and planet.

  12. Doctor advised me to go to the emergency room any time I have chest pains. If I took his advice I would be in debt before the year is out. I just wait it out hoping it isn’t a heart attack. I have insurance.

    • Ditto, I’m 65 and can’t make a rational decision on whether to go to the doctor or not. I have to consider my economic status.

  13. Every politician who votes again Medicare For All has blood on their hands. Absolutely sickening. Remember to call your representative and figure out their stance. If they’re against it, pressure them.

  14. I am not understanding why medical insurance is not for everyone. I am willing to pay the tax. That should never happen in my country.

  15. I’m an American citizen but I live in South Korea. I took my daughter to meet her American family (8 months old) last summer. We were ineligible for travelers’ insurance because we were American citizens. Any type of medical insurance coverage we could apply for would effectively double the cost of our trip, which was using almost the last of our pre-baby savings. It ended up being a similar scenario Cenk mentioned, if it would be cheaper just to risk it. I was stressed my entire trip, hoping my daughter didn’t develop a cold. My sister has horses, I was extra careful because one misstep from the horse means I’m in debt up to my eyeballs. I would rather suffer a broken foot, get on a plane, and get it treated in South Korea than even TRY the hospital in America. We were lucky that we stayed healthy and accident-free our trip. But it made me think of how this is the REALITY for so many families. This is everyday life.

I want to move back to America. I want my daughter to have a fun, stress free childhood. But that simply isn’t the case unless you have affordable health care. It isn’t free in Korea, it is national and there are co-pays. But it is AFFORDABLE. We are even lucky to pay for extra PRIVATE insurance. Many of the extra private insurance companies here are actually American, so they can still turn a profit.

For the richest country in the world, it sure treats its citizens like garbage.

    • ”For the richest country in the world, it sure treats its citizens like garbage.”
      Yea, that’s a weird one.

America is the best but because they are the best… they’re not the best.
Being at the top may cause this. When you’re at the top you want to stay on top and you may eventually have to cut back on things just to stay on top and before you know it you’re being compared to third world countries when it comes to healthcare and education because you had to cut back on those to keep up the pretense that you’re on top.

I once broke my left wrist, cracked a part of my hip (fracture-prone) and squashed a whole bunch of nerves while on holiday in Norway, (Longboarding downhill = bad idea)
Insurance paid for it and I didn’t go into dept ”up to my eyeballs”. I spent the remaining 11 days with a cast up to my elbow until I returned to Germany and 3 weeks later a second cast was put on my arm for an additional 6 weeks. My rate went up but not by a crazy amount compared to what the actual medical bill would have been and only because it was my own fault. Not sure what else to say, really.

  16. But as Americans, we’ve been brainwashed to beleive we deserve to die for not having health insurance, because its our fault for not being able to afford care. Capitalism baby….

  17. I think its pretty obvious , The USA may be an Actual Country. But not a Society which cares for its people. The lack of Medicare for All and the Lack of Gun Control, can only be Described as Population Control.

  18. I live in Canada. A year ago, i had a series of cardiac arrests. I cant calculate the amount of money my 11 days in the hospital was, the icd i received, the medication i recieved. We dont get a bill BUT my thoughts were with Americans afterwards. In the USA, my care wouldve broke us, it wouldve been cheaper for me to die. 42 years old, mother of three. Cheaper for me to die. You guys need to do something about this.
